Personal, the other day I was talking with a friend Handerson on the trends that I saw out there this last trip and on the jump I gave at the Inspiration LA. It is difficult to talk about it in the world vintage/workwear/classic because this world moves slowly, it’s kind of anti-fashion (slow, slow) and has well-defined limits. In spite of all this always appear the fashions, the type the shoe double monkstrap, or the boot moc toe, which form small cycles. I wrote down three things this time:
Sportswear vintage based on the past of Baseball.
– References at the outdoor retro… mountaineering, fishing, mountain climbing, camping.
– Vacation Wear, literally the opposite of workwear and menswear engravatado… the clothes on holiday. More Hawaii and less factory floor, but being able to mix with jeans and a boot, which is the subject of this post.
This month came out a sequence of posts super cool about the“Vacation Wear” on the blog Put This On. Is well high among the brands with the vintage-inspired. Here in Brazil we already walk in the street as a gringo holiday, right? The country is warm, relaxed and informal. The clothes of the holiday in the post from Put This On are those that we associate with the stereotype of the foreign tourists of the third age on our beaches, bone zinho, papete (with half), fanny pack, boxer shorts charge and the shirts and the floral two larger numbers.
The text gives examples of “vacation wear” more moderate, combined in an interesting way and fun in warmer climates. Is what we are used to here, and what we see in our fashion between the tuned in, although I associate print shirts to hipsters style grandpa, mustache ironic, more tropical, more Carmen Miranda.
The vacation wear gringo of shirts printed comes from several influences, but mainly the culture the tiki of the United States and the surf. Another major influence in the current fashion is the revival of the 90s… think of Tim Roth in Pulp Fiction, Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Leo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet, a mixture of shirts, flowers, drugs, and machine guns. The extent to which the male clothing was becoming more casual in the 60’s, to the point that even the president of the united states posed unpretentious for the cover of Life magazine, and those clothes that before were used only at the beach were added to the repertoire male of the day-to-day.
In the middle of the 20th century the american culture has turned a blind eye to the Polynesian. The seeds began to be planted before the Second World War, when the first tiki bar appeared in Hollywood, and the hawaiians began to sell shirts printed for the american tourists.
The explosion came after the war when the american soldiers returned home after serving in the pacific they recreated what would be the culture tiki for them, appropriating the aspects that they liked, in the most generic, superficial, and pop as possible. After serving as one of the outpost of uncle Sam in the fight against the Axis during the Second world War, the residents of the islands Peaceful have gone through an invasion in the following years, with the filming stirred by the crews of Hollywood.
In 1959 Hawaii became a state in the u.s. and established this culture in the United States. Life idealized in an island paradise, as Elvis that back home in Spell Hawaiian and finds his family by spending the day drinking Mai Tai’s but separately for the local culture. It was a dream of post-war in the midst of all the social repression of the time… Nights warm wearing a t-shirt floral with a drink of pineapple in a bar of bamboo to the sound of the waves, well away from the concrete and iron of the factories. The airline tickets were getting more expensive and the Hawaii more accessible, but there was no need to go there: a drink theme in the yard already was escapism enough.
The influence of the Surf
Surfing spread from Hawaii to California, by a variety of factors that began to affect the youth, and along came their cultural influence in fashion and music. The culture also has greatly influenced the music of the era and bands like Dick Dale and the Beach Boys were celebrating the wave of the surf spread through all the corners. Not everyone could surf, but any one could have the style!
The fashion surf brought the boardshorts and other classics of vacation wear modern to the arsenal of men’s fashion, and other classic surfwear of the season, which include shirts, Pendleton, jeans and white sandals Huarache.
Where To Purchase
I’m going to amend the list and the recommendations of Put This On with some stores and national brands that I think legal.
We men generally avoid wearing clothes stamped or very flashy. The style for males, in general, is distinguished by the details, the cut, proportions and textures, drawing attention to the best physical characteristics, and with a picture of a giant. Even so they are a fun alternative to give a special touch to a classic look, even with jeans. For those who enjoy vintage is mamata… all to see!
Not to miss in the days of today, it is easy… just use with basic discrete, smooth, exercising care not to blow up everything. Nothing exaggerated style Johnny Depp, and you can leave your ukulele at home. To ensure success in job interviews use a thong florida no shirt and barefoot in front of HR to get a position on the board while the competitors envious coming home.
Dion Ochner and National
This talk of holidays is exactly the opposite of workwear, which seeks inspiration in the work of industrial aesthetic that never caught on right here because of the weather and various other reasons. I thought at the time the brazilian brand Dion Ochner, a small brand of clothes and accessories by product mix has been seeking inspirations that vary exactly between the workwearand the vacation wear. For me is a national brand that goes super well with this proposal vintage, and most of the products are unisex.
Another national brand that I know of but it has some prints that are more tropical, less aloha/vintage, is the Pyramid Brand.
The thing that you find in thrift stores, men in Brazil are the shirts printed. The risk of these shirts old is cutting out the bad (which can be easily adjusted by a tailor) and the prints are tacky. Search for macaws thrift store in your town.
The brand of shirts hawaiian the most classic of all is called Reyn Spooner. This brand has some shirts popover pretty cool with a guy faded. The ebay is full and the oldest are made in Hawaii.
The shirts printed today tend to be made with a mix of cotton and synthetic. Between the vintage is very common to see shirts of rayon, that has a price as well high. The shirts rayon vintage has prints as well flashy and you will also find prints that go beyond the “aloha” and the approaching style rockabilly.
To classics from the 80 or 90 I recommend contact with the Ubora Clothing , and the thrift store B. Luxury can have a takes aloha shirts oldest.
The shirts printed old has a charm and I don’t like much of what they manufacture nowadays (to not be that mimic the style of the ancient)
The same brands that are reproductions of workwear, such as the brands Toyo (Sugarcane and Buzz Rickson) also tend to make excellent reproductions of vacation wear. The Toyo has the brand name Sun Surf and Duke Kahanamoku (in honor of the legend of surfing) that make shirts with pattern and vintage cut more slim in the arms. The Star of Hollywood makes t-shirts of rayon with unique prints that are not paraianas.
The japanese Yellow Rat is a brand that specializes in clothing inspired by surf and beachwear vintage.
Mister Freedom has some collections inspired by the Pacific beach and also some shirts, bombastic rayon totally rockabilly.
The Self Edge has just opened a store in Mexico focused in this style, so their site is a good source for these tags with footprint, vintage, in spite of the products are imported from Japan and so the price is more expensive.
In addition to the Shirts
I think it is very difficult to use more than one piece, stamped at the same time, although it is possible yes. The same brands that make shirts printed you must also make jackets, shorts, boardshorts, and other pieces inspired by pieces in the casual of the past, often stamped. The Birdwell makes boardshorts totally vintage, and the brazilian Cotton Project. Again, the Yellow Rat, a brand japanese super underground has many legal products with this aesthetic but it is very difficult to achieve without a proxy to send from there.
